CAMI

She gave an excuse a few moments later and walked away from the two Rafferty men, her insides twirling as if she had just rolled end over end down the hillside to the beach.

Her breath seemed to catch and she couldn’t manage to gather her scattered thoughts.

Jon Rafferty. Attracted to her.

It seemed utterly impossible, as unlikely as snow here along the temperate coast. He couldn’t be.

And yet. She couldn’t have mistaken that wild heat in his gaze. The edgy hunger that made her feel hot and breathless and tempted to dig her hands into his hair and kiss him right there in front of everyone.

He didn’t even like her. He thought she was part of a family that had manipulated his father into agreeing to a multiyear lease when he clearly had cognitive issues.

She was a boring contract law attorney whose own fiancé claimed he only slept with her because he wanted to use her father’s influence to further his legal career.

Why would someone like Jon Rafferty possibly be interested in her?

She frowned. Even if he was, so what? People were attracted to each other all the time without doing anything about it.

They wouldn’t act on it. Neither of them was in a good place. He was busy dealing with his father’s failing health and uncertain future, while she was only in Cape Sanctuary for a brief respite from the hectic pace of her life in LA.

She let out a shaky breath and reached for the water bottle she had left in the holder of her folding chair.

“I can’t wait for this!” Rosemary approached her carrying a tray of fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies, still gooey and warm. “What a great turnout. Almost all of our guests showed up to listen to Franklin tonight. Isn’t that marvelous?”

“Amazing,” she said, still feeling shaky.

“If it goes well, maybe we can make it a regular thing. He can come a few times a month to speak to our guests.”

She didn’t want Rosemary to count on anything. If her mother didn’t get her hopes up, she wouldn’t be disappointed when it didn’t happen.

“I’m not sure that’s possible. He’s having a good day today, but who knows what will happen next week or next month? You should probably consider this a one-off.”

Her mother sighed, clearly disappointed. “You’re right. I keep forgetting. Who knows? Maybe I’m going senile, too.”

Though she knew her mother meant the words as a joke, Cami couldn’t bring herself to smile. Though her relationship with Rosemary wasn’t as close as she would like, she would never wish the kind of future that Franklin faced on her mother, or anyone else, for that matter.

The harsh reality almost made her throat close and she took another sip of water.

“I told Jon we would be ready at the top of the hour. Do you want to introduce Mr. Rafferty? I should have talked to you about the format before.”

“An introduction is a great idea. It will make the evening feel a little more official.”
